On Tuesday, January 12, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti causing catastrophic damage and loss of life. The American Red Cross is responding to this tragic event with financial assistance. At this time, no specific request has been made by the Haitian government for the Red Cross to provide blood or blood products to support treatment of the victims of the earthquake. However, the Red Cross is shipping blood products at the request of the UN Mission in Haiti as well as for some patients who have been moved to a hospital in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The American Red Cross Blood Services is meeting the needs of this tragedy through current supplies. At this time, we do not anticipate the need for a special donor appeal to support our efforts. As always, blood donors are encouraged to call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit us online at redcrossblood.org to make an appointment.

Flu Information
Do you have questions about the swine flu?
The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus has caused the first influenza pandemic in more than 40 years. Concern that this strain of influenza will cause this flu season to be worse than normal had led to local agencies stepping-up their preparedness and planning efforts. Working alongside area health departments and emergency planning agencies, the Red Cross hopes to help increase the amount of education it can direct residents to around pandemic flu, and specifically, H1N1.

In Ohio call 1-866-800-1404 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Information on human swine flu can be found on the CDC web site or by calling 1-800-CDC-INFO.

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross encourages people to register themselves on the Safe and Well Website, which is accessible at all times via www.redcross.org, or by clicking on the banner link. The Safe and Well Website is an Internet-based tool that allows those affected by a disaster to let their loved ones know of their well-being. People within a disaster-affected area are able to select and post standard messages. Concerned family members who know the person’s current phone number or a complete home address can then search for the posted messages, providing peace of mind.
